Why is Anita Among so certain about her success in securing a second term as Speaker of Parliament?
Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament, has firmly addressed recent protests calling for her resignation. In response to demands for her to step down, she questioned, “I have heard some people say I resign, resign and go where?”
Among emphasized her commitment to serving her remaining term and clarified her intentions for the future. “I still have one more term to lead Parliament. When I finish my five years in the next term, I will give it to my young brother Thomas to take over; it’s not good to cling to power,” she stated. Our question is where does Anita Among get her confidence from? Anita is the political and public officer with the poorest rating, very poor appeal to electorate, she has been sanctioned by the US government and British government, something which largely curtails her ability to represent Uganda among Commonwealth States, she cannot transact internationally but she believes that she will end this term and progress into another term. Where does this confidence come from?
These comments were made on Sunday during a Thanksgiving ceremony for her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, at St Charles Lwanga Catholic Church in Kigarama, Mitooma District. Among took this opportunity to also urge President Museveni to safeguard the independence of the legislative arm of government. “Uganda has three arms of government, and the Legislature, which I head, needs to be protected, your excellency. Please protect the legislature,” she said.
Among also criticized recent demonstrations against corruption, labeling them as driven by “self-seekers” who undermine core values. She defended Parliament by asserting that corruption issues do not originate from the legislature, as MPs are not accounting officers. “The stealing, as the LC chairman said, does not start from Parliament; let’s not demonize Parliament,” Among argued. In this Among played ignorant of the authorising officers. Those who authorise payments are actually the ones who create the stealing conduit.
We shall live to tell.
