In a recent turn of events, a UPDF officer has been arrested following the controversial dressing of Kigtum Woman Member of Parliament, Lillian Aber, in full military regalia during a public event. The incident, which occurred in the lead-up to the Terehe sita celebrations in Kitgum District, has ignited widespread criticism and raised pertinent questions regarding the legality and appropriateness of civilians wearing military attire.
Hon. Aber, in a now-deleted tweet, acknowledged her participation in a pre-event cleaning exercise organized by the UPDF. However, her decision to don the army uniform has sparked considerable backlash, prompting inquiries into the legality of her actions and concerns about breaches of protocol.
UPDF Spokesperson Felix Kulaigye confirmed the arrest of the officer responsible for providing MP Aber with the army uniform, emphasizing that disciplinary action will be taken. Kulaigye stated, “The UPDF noticed the Member of Parliament of Kitgum District donning our uniform. We demanded her explanation, to which she has expressed regret. The MP has indeed apologized.”
Despite Aber’s apology, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of upholding military protocol and respecting the clear demarcation between civilian and military domains. It underscores the necessity for heightened awareness and adherence to regulations governing the use of military attire by civilians, safeguarding the integrity of military institutions and preserving the sanctity of civilian roles within society.
