According to the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb), the percentage of students qualifying for university admission after sitting for the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Examinations (UACE) in 2023 has risen significantly compared to previous years.
Uneb disclosed that out of the 110,553 candidates who took the UACE examinations from November 13 to December 1, 2023, across 2,102 examination centers nationwide, at least 73 percent met the requirements for university admission. This marks a noticeable improvement in performance compared to both the 2022 and 2021 examinations.
Uneb’s executive secretary, Dan Odongo, announced on Thursday that the number of candidates increased by 12,663 compared to the previous year.
“A thorough analysis of the overall candidates’ performance indicates that an exceptionally high percentage (99.1%) of candidates met the criteria for receiving the UACE certificate, much like in 2022,” stated Dan Odongo.
Uneb further revealed that 80,643 candidates in the 2023 exams achieved the minimum requirement of obtaining 2 principal level passes for university admission, a notable increase from 67,815 candidates in the 2022 examinations.
In cases where one principal and two subsidiary pass levels are considered for admission to other tertiary institutions, 90.7 percent of the candidates were deemed eligible, showing improvement from the 89.3 percent recorded in 2022.
