The Uganda National Boxing Team, also known as the Bombers, faced a disappointing outcome at the ongoing World Paris Olympic Games qualifiers in Busto Arsizio, Italy. All four representatives from Uganda, including team captain Joshua Tukamuhebwa, have been eliminated, marking their second unsuccessful attempt to secure slots for the 2024 Paris Summer Games
The latest blow occurred when Shafick Mawanda lost by a walkover in the men’s 51kg category due to organizational issues, further exacerbated by the absence of a team manager provided by the hosting committee. Yusuf Nkobeza suffered a 5-0 defeat to Romania’s Andrei Aradoaie in the men’s 80kg round of 64 preliminaries, adding to the team’s struggles.
Despite Tukamuhebwa’s initial promise, winning his first two bouts in the men’s 63kg category, he eventually fell short in the round of 16 against Jordan’s Alkasbeh Obada. Emily Nakalema, the female boxer, also faced elimination after losing to Cape Verde’s Ivanusa Moreira in the Women’s 66kg category.
Moses Muhangi, the President of the Uganda Boxing Federation, expressed disappointment, emphasizing the need for unwavering support from the National Council of Sports and the Uganda Olympic Committee. He highlighted the interference issues and urged for a united effort to avoid a potential failure to qualify for the Olympics.
The challenges faced by the team, including visa delays and inadequate preparations, were further compounded by disorganization that led to a boxer missing his fight. The coaching staff, led by Twaibu Mayanja and assisted by Joseph Buule, struggled against these setbacks, hampering the team’s overall performance.
With one last opportunity remaining, the Bombers are set to participate in the third and final Olympic qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 23 to June 3. This critical event presents a chance for redemption and the possibility of securing a coveted spot in the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
