The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) is gearing up for a significant milestone as it prepares for the mass registration and renewal of national identity cards, urging the public to actively participate in this crucial process.
According to NIRA spokesperson, Osborn Mushabe, the upcoming renewal process not only offers the chance to update individuals’ national ID details but also marks a significant advancement in aligning with international standards. Mushabe highlighted that the new ID cards will incorporate cutting-edge features such as IRIS and other biometrics, ensuring compliance with global benchmarks.
Having witnessed millions of Ugandans register for national IDs in 2014 and 2015 with a validity period of ten years, Mushabe emphasized the importance of readiness for the impending renewal exercise. He emphasized, “We are approaching the 10-year mark since the initial registration, making it imperative for all Ugandans to actively engage in this renewal exercise.”
Importantly, Mushabe clarified that while national ID cards have a validity period of a decade from the date of issue, citizenship itself remains perpetual. This distinction underscores the ongoing relevance and significance of the national ID beyond its expiration date.
Highlighting the broader regional context, national IDs play a crucial role as travel documents within the East African region, aligning with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Notably, the capture of the latest facial image of the document holder is a prerequisite according to these international standards.
To ensure maximum accessibility and inclusivity, Mushabe announced comprehensive plans to conduct the renewal exercise at the parish, ward, and sub-county levels, ensuring that all Ugandans, regardless of their location, have access to this vital service.
