The Ugandan government has announced a change in ID renewal. Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Gen. David Muhoozi, stated citizens won’t pay the usual Shs50,000, except for express service.
This assurance comes amid concerns raised by MPs about delays and funds allocation.
Despite a Shs300 billion budget, no funds were disbursed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, hindering recruitment and procurement.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa stressed urgency, urging over 15.2 million IDs renewal by June.
He called for expedited recruitment efforts while awaiting funds to meet the deadline.
MPs like Hon. Tonny Ayoo emphasized the need for efficiency in the renewal process.
They suggested that the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) adopt streamlined systems.
Legislator Hon. David Mugole raised concerns about errors in previous enrollments due to delayed recruitment.
He advocated timely recruitment to avoid inaccuracies, especially regarding age-related benefits.
Additionally, legislators called for inclusivity in the ID issuance process. Hon. Joyce Acan highlighted challenges faced by persons with disabilities, while Hon. Helen Kahunde addressed concerns of indigenous communities.
Minister Muhoozi reassured the public that despite delays, procurement processes for ICT equipment are underway. Staff training on the new National Security Information System is ongoing.
The government’s commitment to addressing these concerns signals a positive step towards ensuring efficient and inclusive ID renewal processes for all citizens.
