The State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Eng. Hillary Oneck, has appealed to the international community to assist in meeting the needs of refugees currently hosted by the country. Oneck highlighted the significant challenge posed by severe underfunding and the continuous influx of refugees into Uganda.
According to Oneck, the country is struggling to provide adequate food to refugees, resulting in the provision of only one meal per day. This effort requires approximately 5 million US dollars monthly to sustain the 1.6 million refugees residing in Uganda.
Oneck emphasized the fundamental rights of refugees to receive sufficient nourishment, stating that they deserve a minimum of three meals per day. He urged for increased interventions to address the humanitarian needs of the refugee population.
These remarks were made during the signing of an agreement between the Ugandan government, the Japanese government, and the World Food Program. As part of this agreement, Japan has contributed 2000 metric tons of rice valued at 2.2 million US dollars to support 50,000 newly arrived refugees in Uganda.
Uganda currently hosts the highest number of refugees in Africa, with over 1.6 million individuals seeking refuge within its borders.https://theprism.co.ug/uganda-secures-re-election-to-africa-peace-and-security-council/
