Uganda and Hungary are poised to ink a memorandum of understanding aimed at bolstering collaboration in the agricultural sector. The announcement came at the culmination of a two-day official visit by Istvan Nagy, Hungary’s Minister of Agriculture, to Uganda.
Accompanying Minister Istvan Nagy was Zsolt Mezaros, Hungary’s Ambassador to Kenya accredited to Uganda. Their arrival at Entebbe International Airport was met by Amb. Elly Kamahungye, the director of international economic cooperation at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Jessica Namuddu, the Consular Officer at the Ugandan Embassy in Berlin.
During his visit, Minister Istvan Nagy held meetings with Bright Rwamirama, Uganda’s Minister of State for Animal Industry, at Cotton House Kampala, as well as with Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, in the VC’s boardroom. These meetings were attended by officials from Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, and staff from Kyambogo University.
Discussions during these meetings revolved around various mutual interests, including exploring potential cooperation in knowledge transfer, training, scholarships in the agriculture sector, and other investment programs.
Jessica Namuddu, the Consular Officer at the Ugandan Embassy in Berlin, commented, “It was agreed that a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of agriculture, encompassing all potential areas of cooperation, will be drafted by the Hungarian government and shared with the Ugandan government for their input. Additionally, a business delegation will be arranged between the two governments at a later date.”
She further noted, “The discussions also touched upon the idea of value addition on agricultural products, machinery, and fertilizers. Moreover, plans for the long-awaited aquaculture center proposed to be established in Soroti were confirmed for implementation.”
