In the just released UCE Results, A total of 364,469 candidates were registered for the examinations, with 361,695 ultimately taking the exams, reflecting a 4.3% increase from the 349,459 candidates who sat for the exams the previous year in 2022.
According to the outcome, 20% of male candidates passed in Division 1, in contrast to 15% of female candidates. Additionally, 4.2% of female candidates failed the exams, compared to 4% of male candidates.
Dan Odongo, the executive secretary of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), reported that the overall performance in 2023 surpassed that of 2022. Specifically, 64,782 candidates passed in Division 1, up from 46,667 in 2022. Conversely, the number of candidates who failed decreased to 14,879 in 2023, compared to 15,756 in 2022.
Odongo highlighted the poor performance in science subjects, noting that less than 20% of candidates achieved credit pass levels in Physics and Chemistry, with 40% failing these subjects. He attributed this to various factors including inadequate teaching, a lack of practical instruction, and a shortage of science teachers in some schools.
Regarding examination malpractice, Odongo stated that such cases have been decreasing over the years. Schools with withheld results will be notified through their designated portals.
