The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) announced it will not pay enumerators extra for the six-day extension of the National Census. Deputy Executive Director Mr. Godfrey Nabongo revealed this on May 20 while addressing journalists in Kampala.
UBOS extended the census on May 19 to help enumerators facing log-in challenges complete their tasks. “The enumerators’ contract specified the job’s duration. We are paying for the job completed within the 10 days,” Mr. Nabongo stated. Similarly, he emphasized the extra days are for finishing the work, not earning more money.

Mr. Nabongo urged local governments to utilize these extra days to complete the census exercise. Enumerators received a daily allowance of Shs50,000, totaling Shs500,000 for 10 days.
Enumerators Respond:
Conversely, Ms. Mercy Namyalo, an enumerator in Kawempe Division, Kampala, expressed dissatisfaction. “The delays were not our fault. Ubos is not being fair,” she said. However, Mr. Michael Agaba, an enumerator in Kitintale, Nakawa Division, saw the extension as beneficial. “This is an opportunity for uncounted people in my area to be enumerated,” he said.
The 2024 National Housing and Population Census was originally scheduled from May 10 to May 19. By midnight on Sunday, Ubos reported enumerating 10.4 million households, certainly achieving 98 percent coverage.
