The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has issued a cautionary notice to the public regarding the presence of impostors posing as UBOS staff during the national census.
In a statement released on Friday evening, UBOS expressed concern over reports circulating on social media platforms about individuals taking advantage of the ongoing genuine national listing exercise in preparation for the forthcoming National Population and Housing Census 2024, scheduled to commence on May 10, 2024.
According to UBOS, these individuals are purportedly visiting households under the guise of UBOS employees, using official letterheads, and falsely claiming to verify the possession of National Identity Cards as a prerequisite for participation in Census 2024.
UBOS emphasized that its teams are currently conducting listing activities in various cities including Arua, Fort Portal, Gulu, Hoima, Jinja, Lira, Mbale, Masaka, Mbarara, Soroti, and will soon cover the greater Kampala area, comprising Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono districts. Additionally, efforts are underway to visit other districts to ensure complete coverage of households previously missed during the listing exercise.
The agency assured the public that during all statistical field activities, including household listing for Census 2024, UBOS teams are accompanied by guides such as area LC 1 Chairpersons or elected leaders familiar with the localities.
UBOS urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of impersonation to the nearest police station. It warned individuals involved in such deceptive practices to cease immediately, emphasizing that those identified will be held accountable and handed over to the authorities.
For further inquiries, UBOS encouraged contacting their department of Public and Media Relations at 0755342128 or calling the Police toll-free number 0800199399 for Census 2024.
