Two individuals have succumbed to COVID-19 in kabale district, as confirmed by the District Health Officer, Dr. Gilbert Arinaitwe Mateeka.
This disclosure took place during a ceremony where the Byengoma family, owners of Arcadia Cottages in Kabale District, led by Nicholas Byengoma, donated essential medical equipment to Rugarama Hospital.
Dr. Mateeka revealed at Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality that despite the shortage of test kits, over 20 patients have been tested this month, with some in critical condition.
Dr. Mateeka emphasized the importance of adhering to precautions, urging both health workers and the public to practice regular hand washing, sanitization, and risk assessment. He also advocated for appropriate behaviors and encouraged the uptake of booster vaccines when available to minimize the risk of contracting the virus.
On January 17, 2024, Kabale Regional Referral Hospital reported a resurgence of COVID-19 cases. Dr. Anne Namutebi, a physician at the hospital, confirmed a number of positive cases under admission and designated the medical ward as an isolation center, expressing her belief in the persistent nature of COVID-19.
Dr. Namutebi cautioned against misinformation, emphasizing the ongoing prevalence of COVID-19 and the potential for future surges in Uganda.
Contrary to the declaration of the end of the global health emergency for COVID-19 by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on May 5, 2023, the virus continues to pose a global health threat. He urged countries to transition from emergency response to managing COVID-19 alongside other infectious diseases.
