The Ministry of Education and Sports, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has undertaken a comprehensive retraining initiative for lecturers at Makerere University. The primary objective of this initiative is to combat the prevalent issue of Sex for Marks and other forms of moral decadence within academic institutions. Under the auspices of the Emerging Leaders Program, spearheaded by the First Lady and Minister of Education, 38 lecturers from Makerere University underwent a specialized training program in Jinja.
Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest during the closing ceremony of the training exercise, State Minister for Industry David Bahati emphasized the significance of the project. He asserted that the training program is poised to play a pivotal role in combating corruption and various forms of immorality in the country. The First Lady initiated this program to address moral challenges, particularly among the youth, encompassing issues such as sexual immorality, drug abuse, and corruption. Minister Bahati highlighted the importance of building a critical mass within universities to positively impact the younger generation and society as a whole.
Furthermore, Minister Bahati revealed that the program, which commenced with lecturers from Makerere University, is slated to be expanded nationwide. The Ministry of Education and Sports has forged partnerships with the Global Leadership Summit and Life Ministries, led by Bishop Joshua Lwere, to implement this initiative.
Bishop Joshua Lwere commended the First Lady and the Ministry for their timely initiative, considering the prevailing moral decadence in the country. He expressed optimism that the program would serve as a transformative force, particularly in addressing issues like sex for marks and corruption reported in tertiary institutions.
Academicians who underwent the week-long training in Jinja expressed their endorsement of the initiative, acknowledging its potential to cultivate morally upright students. Dr. Joelia Nasaka from the Department of Veterinary Sciences at Makerere University affirmed her commitment to utilizing the knowledge gained during the training to educate her fellow lecturers and eradicate the vice of sex for marks at Makerere University.
