President Yoweri Museveni has given his assent to several bills aimed at facilitating the smooth operation of government affairs. Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, conveyed to the parliament that five bills have received approval from President Museveni. These bills include the Civil Aviation Amendment Act 2024, Judicature Amendment Act 2023, Explosives Act 2023, Competition Act 2023, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 2023.
The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 2023 was reintroduced by the government following its nullification by the Constitutional Court due to a lack of quorum during its initial passage in parliament. This act is designed to criminalize the use, cultivation, supply, and trading of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
Tayebwa has also urged the Minister of Trade and Cooperatives to develop the Consumer Protection and Management Bill. This bill aims to safeguard consumers against fraudulent and dishonest practices in commercial transactions.
Member of Parliament for Nakaseke South County, Semakula Lutamaguzi, has called upon the president to also approve the Minimum Wage Bill. This bill is intended to protect Ugandan citizens from exploitation by employers who pay inadequate wages for their labor.
