Anti-corruption activists, including NTV and K FM radio presenter Faiza Salima (also known as Faiza Fabz), appeared before the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court this morning to apply for bail. The group also includes Thomas Kanzira, Benard Olupot Ewalu, Edgar Hamala Barlow, and Aljab Musinguzi.
The activists were arrested on July 23, 2024, for peacefully protesting against government corruption, particularly targeting Parliament. They demanded the resignation of Speaker Anita Among and four backbench commissioners. The commissioners have been criticized for awarding themselves a significant sum of 1.7 billion shillings as “service awards.”
According to the charge sheet, the accused gathered at Oasis Mall Nakumatt in Kampala on July 23, 2024, shouting “Anita Among must resign” and displaying placards with the same message, causing public annoyance, obstruction, or inconvenience.
The prosecution alleged that the activists’ actions were likely to cause a “breach of the peace.” They were charged with being a common nuisance, idle, and disorderly.
