Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, criticized the government’s proposal of new taxes without demonstrating commensurate service delivery for the taxes collected. He expressed concern over the financial burden imposed on citizens, similar to the traders’ protests in downtown Kampala over high taxes, while corrupt practices divert funds. Ssenyonyi made these remarks during the presentation of the Alternative National Budget Priorities for 2024/25 at Parliament, urging the government to address traders’ concerns.
Ssenyonyi emphasized that the Opposition’s alternative budget transcends mere financial planning; it underscores the Opposition’s dedication to bolstering communities through effective service delivery and outlines a vision for the nation.
“The human rights-based approach we’ve adopted underpins our alternative budget, signifying our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the fundamental freedoms and rights of all Ugandan citizens. We envision the budget process as a potent tool for social justice and equitable development. Hence, ensuring no one is left behind necessitates resource allocation promoting accountability and transparency,” added Ssenyonyi.
Robert Kyagulanyi, President of the National Unity Platform, cautioned that despite the allure of alternative policies, achieving them hinges on leaders transcending selfish interests and combating corruption.
“We must resist, reject, and eradicate all forms of corruption in public administration; otherwise, our resources will continue draining away due to personal greed, jeopardizing collective well-being and lives. As the National Unity Platform, we’ll continue resolutely in this endeavor,” said Kyagulanyi.
Miria Matembe urged MPs to stand steadfast by their principles, citing her own experience of being deprived of benefits after opposing the removal of term limits.
“Despite adversity, I’ve remained steadfast. I served this country for 30 years, yet when I stood against term limit removal, I was cast aside without pension or gratuity. I don’t advocate for blame, but I reveal how individuals can be deprived. I continue serving for a legacy where standing with the people of Uganda aligns with divine support,” said Matembe.
