In response to the recent release of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination results, the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIP) has issued a call to the government for the establishment of boarding facilities aimed at fostering the retention and enrollment of learners with special needs. Out of the 809 candidates who took the UCE examinations in 2023, 45 did not pass, while 76 achieved first division, 82 attained second division, and others secured third and fourth divisions.
During a press briefing held at Bukoto, Esther Kyozira, the Chief Executive Officer of NUDIP, emphasized the importance of boarding facilities for learners with special needs who face challenges commuting from their homes to school. She highlighted that such facilities would facilitate their integration within the school environment. Additionally, Kyozira advocated for the provision of adequate learning and teaching materials in schools to support the education of students with disabilities.
Leah Diana Seera, the Program Officer for Inclusive Education at NUDIP, urged the government to conduct an investigation to understand the reasons behind the enrollment of learners with special needs who ultimately fail to sit the exams.
