Today marked the 38th anniversary of the National Resistance Movement’s rise to power, with celebrations taking place in Jinja City’s Northern Division at St. John’s Wakitaka SS playground. The event, themed “Building a Country We All Cherish,” saw the participation of various government and top NRM officials.
In a startling revelation, a man named Moses Simbwa was presented during the celebration, asserting that he had been manipulated by the opposition to falsely claim he was tortured by the government when, in reality, he had suffered an accident. Simbwa publicly apologized to President Museveni for spreading misinformation about his government.
Addressing the audience, Simbwa explained, “I am here because Mama [Milly Babalanda] brought me. I had spent three years in hiding, but eventually, my foot was rotting, and I decided to come forward and tell the truth. Mr. President, these opposition individuals use us like rebels. I will tell you everything if you grant me an audience.”
He continued, “I am the youth who was paraded around the world to testify that Museveni’s government tortures people. I will also testify because I know everything that the people in opposition do. I ask for security to protect me because even journalists witness these things. When we speak out, the opposition claims the government killed us. Mr. President, the drones that abduct Ugandans are operated by the opposition.”
President Museveni, applauding Simbwa’s statements, assured the gathering that he and the security apparatus are aware of such activities. He pledged to expose what he referred to as “bogus groups” within the opposition who collaborate with foreign interests to undermine Uganda.
“We in the security system know what Simbwa Moses was talking about, and at the right time, we will expose those bogus groups they call opposition. They go to European countries to speak ill about my government, not knowing how strong the NRM is,” stated Museveni.
This revelation echoes past instances where individuals claimed to be victims of torture orchestrated by the opposition, raising concerns about the use of such narratives for political purposes.
