A group of legislators led by Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo is preparing a motion to censure Mathias Mpuuga and three Backbench Commissioners over a controversial service award. The motion accuses the involved parties of misconduct and abuse of office.
Mathias Mpuuga, the then Leader of the Opposition, negotiated and received Shs500 million as a service award from the Parliamentary Commission in March 2022. Additionally, each of the three backbench commissioners—Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central), Esther Afoyochan (Zombo Woman), and Prossy Mbabazi (Rubanda Woman)—received Shs400 million. These payments were distributed on a person-to-holder basis, despite the recipients having served less than a year in office, raising questions about the legitimacy of the awards.
While the three backbench commissioners have remained silent on the matter, Mpuuga has publicly defended himself, asserting his innocence and engaging in a contentious battle with his party, the National Unity Platform, and its leader, Robert Kyagulanyi.
