Ministry of Education,Uganda has rolled out new directives affecting students admitted to prestigious schools below the required cutoff points.
According to the ministry’s announcement, learners admitted to these institutions without meeting the designated cutoff marks will be ineligible for registration by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) for national exams.
Dr. Jane Okou Egau, head of the placement committee at the education ministry, raised concerns about schools granting admissions to students who fall short of the cutoff points.
She stressed that this practice, allowing schools to admit students with lower aggregates than required, is unacceptable.
The ministry aims to address this issue by barring such students from registering for national exams through UNEB.
Under the new guidelines, students falling into this category must seek registration elsewhere for their Senior Four or Senior Six national exams.
Dr. Egau expressed worries about the plight of students who might spend years in a school but encounter hurdles during national exam registration.
The education ministry’s strategy for the 2024 Senior One cohort includes strict adherence to these guidelines, with students expected to report to school on February 19, 2024.
This initiative forms part of the ministry’s efforts to uphold the integrity of the admissions process and ensure that learners admitted to top schools meet the required academic standards.
Dr. Egau highlighted the ministry’s awareness of schools denying UNEB stars, those with the best aggregate marks, the chance to join their institutions.
The announcement came during the conclusion of the 2024 Senior One selection and placement exercise at the Uganda Manufacturers Association Multipurpose Hall in Lugogo, Kampala.
