Ever since Hon. Matthias Mpuuga’s fallout with the National Unity Platform (NUP) over a controversial service award, he and his political allies in Masaka have avoided key local events. This strategic absence seems to be a move to avoid backlash from NUP supporters, as Masaka is considered an NUP stronghold with most leaders aligned with the party.
On Saturday, during the fifth anniversary celebration of Bishop Severus Jjumba at Our Lady of Sorrow Cathedral-Kitovu, all three Masaka City legislators—Hon. Matthias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe), Dr. Abed Bwanika (Kimaanya-Kabonera), and Juliet Kakande (Masaka City Woman MP)—were notably absent and did not send representatives.
This unexpected no-show surprised many, including Ms. Christine Namazzi, a local Christian, who noted that the MPs usually attend significant diocesan events. In contrast, Mr. Joseph Ssewungu (Kalungu West MP) from the neighboring Kalungu District spoke on behalf of the area’s legislators. Other MPs from Greater Masaka, including Mr. John Paul Mpalanyi (Kyotera County) and Ms. Veronica Nanyondo (Bukomansimbi District Woman MP), attended the event.
Former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and several other notable figures, including Masaka City Mayor Florence Namayanja, were present to celebrate Bishop Jjumba’s accomplishments over the past five years. During his tenure, Bishop Jjumba has established new parishes and deaneries, promoted environmental conservation, and strengthened ties between the diocese and the central government.
Bishop Jjumba expressed gratitude to his supporters, acknowledging their role in the progress made during his leadership. He succeeded the late Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa in 2019 and continues to guide the diocese, which spans several districts and includes 58 parishes and 16 deaneries.
Hon. Mpuuga said he was absent due to prior commitments outside Masaka City. His tense relationship with NUP over a disputed Shs1.7 billion service award remains a major issue. NUP leaders accuse him of corruption and want him to resign. Mr. Mpuuga denies these charges, asserting that the award was justified and legal.
Bishop Jjumba’s milestone anniversary conclusively highlighted both his achievements and the ongoing political dynamics within Masaka.
