At least two people were killed during a scuffle in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso district on Tuesday night.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire identified one of the deceased persons as Nalumansi Evelyne Zaliya Kilonde Katende, 50, a resident of Mpangala Cell, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.
An unidentified individual dressed in UPDF camouflage attire also died.
“The incident occurred on July 23, 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM at Buddo Junction, Nakasozi Cell, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District,” according to Police Statement at around 1:20 am on Wednesday.
Police further said a suspect had been arrested in connection with the shooting.
“The suspect, whose identity is being withheld to avoid compromising the investigation, alleges that the deceased male in UPDF attire and others, currently at large, intercepted and kidnapped him earlier that day while he was with friends and family in Buwama,” said Police’s Owoyesigyire.
“The suspect was reportedly transferred to the alleged kidnappers’ vehicle, registration number UAK 375U, a silver Toyota Progress,” he added.
“Upon reaching Buddo, the suspect claims he managed to disarm one of the kidnappers, leading to the shootout that resulted in the deaths of the alleged kidnapper and a passerby, Nalumansi Evelyne Zaliya.”
Eyewitnesses said they heard about five bullets during the incident.
Uganda has in recent years witnessed a surge in gun violence.
In 2023, 330 people died in the 300 cases of murder by shooting according to police’s statistics.
The statistics indicated a 7.5 per cent rise in gun violence from 2022.
Owoyesigyire said bodies of the deceased have been transported to the City Mortuary at Mulago for post-mortem examinations.
“Our detectives are actively working to uncover the events that led to this tragic incident. Materials of evidential value that include a Pistol have been recovered and will aid in the ongoing investigations,” he emphasised.
