Rapper Keko, who recently returned to Uganda after several years in Canada, has voiced her surprise at singer Eddy Kenzo’s international success with his distinctly local style of music.
Keko highlighted that in a country where artists often aim to create music with international appeal, Kenzo’s music maintained a strong Ugandan flavor.
She attributed much of his global recognition, particularly for his song “Sitya Loss,” to the influence of the Triplets Ghetto Kids, whose dance moves became synonymous with the track and helped propel it to international acclaim, even earning Kenzo a BET Award.
Expressing her views in a local radio interview, Keko emphasized that while Kenzo’s music is intriguing, it still resonates strongly with Ugandan audiences.
She suggested that the involvement of the Ghetto Kids played a significant role in the song’s success, underscoring their ability to amplify the appeal of Ugandan music on a global stage.
In a recent statement, Kenzo himself acknowledged that “Sitya Loss” initially faced rejection in Uganda due to its departure from the familiar sound preferred by local audiences.
However, its eventual success abroad ultimately led to its acceptance within Uganda.
Keko’s remarks shed light on the complex dynamics of Ugandan music’s journey to international recognition, highlighting the role of unique collaborations and global trends in shaping its trajectory.
