Four individuals accused of tampering with evidence in the murder of Kampala businessman Henry Katanga were released on bail Wednesday after a lengthy court battle. The suspects, including Katanga’s daughters Patricia Kakwanza and Martha Nkwanzi, Dr. Charles Otai, and domestic worker George Amanyire, were granted bail by High Court Judge Isaac Muwata.
Justice Muwata acknowledged the prosecution’s concerns about witness interference but deemed the presented sureties sufficient, including a UPDF officer. Each suspect was released on a cash bail of Shs2 million, and their sureties were bonded at Shs20 million non-cash.
Defense lawyer Jet Tumwebaze expressed relief at the decision, calling it “the most adjourned bail application in the history of Uganda.”
The four remain charged with tampering with evidence in the ongoing murder investigation against Molly Katanga, Henry’s widow. Molly, currently hospitalized with injuries sustained during the incident, is expected to submit her own bail application soon.
Prosecutors allege that Molly killed her husband on November 2, 2023, while Patricia and Martha are accused of destroying evidence related to the crime. Dr. Otai and Mr. Amanyire are charged with aiding the other suspects.
The case remains under investigation, and the next court hearing will determine the future of the charges against all involved.
