Traffic along the Kampala-Masaka highway has been redirected following a road section collapse between Kyengera and Buddo junction due to heavy rainfall on Sunday. This incident marks the second occurrence in four months.
Allan Ssempebwa, spokesperson for the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), attributed the collapse to a failure in the drainage system. He stated, “We are witnessing a failure at this section of the highway, where the drainage systems have collapsed. Our immediate focus is on mobilizing materials and equipment to address the situation as swiftly as possible.”
The collapse has resulted in severe traffic congestion along the Busega-Kyengera section, prompting authorities to advise motorists to utilize alternative routes such as Nakawuka road-Budo junction or Kitemu, as well as Mityana road-Buloba-Nsangi to access the Kampala-Masaka highway.
Motorists traveling from Masaka to Kampala have been instructed to use routes via Kitemu, Budo-Nakawuka, or Nsangi-Buloba-Mutyaba road to reach Kampala, while UNRA monitors the situation closely.
SP Michael Kananura, the Traffic and Road Safety Public Relations Officer, emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging patience and discipline as Traffic Police and UNRA teams evaluate the extent of the damage.
