The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Mutebi, has voiced concerns regarding taxation, stressing the importance of a fair and transparent system. His remarks were part of his Eid communication as Muslims across the nation prepare to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday.
In downtown Kampala (Kikuubo), protests erupted among traders on Monday, leading them to close their shops in opposition to the implementation of the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS). Police arrested two individuals during these demonstrations.
Traders argue that the introduction of EFRIS, which includes Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs), e-invoicing, and direct communication with business transaction systems, results in double taxation. They also express difficulties in understanding the new automated sales records and levy system.
In his Eid El-Fitr 2024 message, the Kabaka recognized the citizens’ duty to pay taxes but emphasized the need for improved communication and coordination between taxpayers and collectors. He stated, “While taxes can contribute to our development, they hinder progress if not implemented fairly. We need an impartial approach that encourages our people to pay taxes willingly and supports those who require assistance in meeting their tax obligations.”
Additionally, Kabaka Mutebi expressed gratitude to those who demonstrated compassion towards the poor and sick during the fasting period. He urged the community to follow their example, emphasizing the importance of addressing collective issues without expecting personal gain or public recognition.
The Kabaka also encouraged support for young talent in creativity, sports, and theater, highlighting the role of schools and parents in nurturing these skills. He cited football as an example of how talent can enhance lives and create job opportunities.
“Let us continue to pray for our country, especially for our leaders, that they may foster communication and consensus, even amidst political and religious differences,” the Kabaka concluded, emphasizing the importance of service over controversy for the benefit of ordinary citizens.
Kabaka Mutebi extended blessings to all fasting observers, encouraging them to maintain their prayers and acts of kindness.
