The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Kamya, has announced her office’s intention to investigate allegations of ‘mismanagement’ of public offices, funds, and corruption within Parliament. This decision follows the emergence of the social media campaign known as #UgandaParliamentExhibition, which claims that National Resistance Movement (NRM) commissioners awarded themselves Shs400 million, while Mathias Mpuuga, the National Unity Platform (NUP) commissioner, allegedly received Shs500 million.
Addressing the media at the Inspectorate offices in Kampala, Kamya stated that the issues within Parliament have garnered significant public and media attention, and as the Inspectorate of Government, she could not overlook them. “We have received numerous whistleblower accounts regarding the internal workings of Parliament, as well as petitions from ordinary citizens urging us to intervene.”
According to Ms. Kamya, the Inspectorate has decided to initiate an investigation into allegations of mismanagement of public offices, funds, and corruption within Parliament.
Meanwhile, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, the principal of the NUP party, has called for action regarding Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament and a commissioner at Parliament. Bobi Wine stated that Mpuuga must apologize, resign from his position as a commissioner, and return the money allegedly received before undergoing any rehabilitation process.
“My Deputy President and Commissioner of Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, was implicated in this scandal. It was alleged that Mpuuga, along with Speaker Anita, among other commissioners, awarded himself Shs500 million. This was deeply troubling,” Bobi Wine remarked.
“In a meeting involving my deputy presidents, party leadership, and other prominent figures, Mpuuga admitted his involvement in this misconduct. He confessed to wrongfully awarding himself Shs500 million, which was meant for the holder’s benefit, not predecessors or successors,” emphasized Bobi Wine.
