The government has given its approval for the removal of Mulago Police Barracks, which currently accommodates 54 police officers on a 4-acre piece of land. Prime Minister Robinnah Nabbanja confirmed this decision during the Prime Minister’s Question Time in response to concerns raised by members of parliament, notably Shadow Minister of Internal Affairs Betty Nambooze Bakireke.
Nambooze expressed worry over the relocation of the police barracks, especially considering the existing shortage of housing units for police officers. She pointed out a discrepancy in the numbers, stating that the relocation would affect 162 officers, contrary to the figure provided by the Prime Minister.
Nambooze urged the government to halt the relocation until alternative housing arrangements are made for the affected officers. Additionally, she requested the Minister of Internal Affairs to provide updates on the proposed construction of 53,000 police housing units nationwide.
The Prime Minister explained that the decision to remove the police barracks aims to free up space for the expansion of Mulago Hospital facilities. She assured that the displaced police officers will be relocated to their original barracks.
