MK Movement, the political pressure group coordinated by Uganda’s First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has officially rebranded into a newly formed political party Dubbed “Patriotic League of Uganda attracting an endorsement from over 100 MPs of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Dozens of lawmakers, serving Cabinet Ministers, and hundreds of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s fans graced the launch of the rebranding of MK Movement to Patriotic League of Uganda which took place in Naguru, a Kampala suburb.
The event was attended by Agriculture Minister, Hon Frank Tumwebaze, Microfinance Minister Haruna Kasolo, ICT and National Guidance State Minister, Hon. Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku, and former State Minister for Primary Health Care Mike Mukula among others.
The new political organization’s emblem features Gen Muhoozi’s photo adapted from the now defunct MK Movement with a silhouette of a lion at the right and the name below it maintaining the yellow colors, likening it to the ruling NRM.
Igara East MP, Michael Mawanda presiding over the launch on behalf of Gen Muhoozi who also sits on Muhoozi’s Central Committee revealed that they have transitioned from a pressure group that wants to have Muhoozi replace his father as president into a civic Organization.
“We the MK Movement …Hereby constitute ourselves into a civic organization and Assume and Adopt a new name and identity, the PATRIOTIC LEAGUE OF UGANDA, to work towards reviving in Ugandans a spirit of good citizenship, national pride, national service, protection of vulnerable persons, combating corruption and wastage of public resources, and protection of the environment,
The launch of the civic movement gives Gen Muhoozi’s supporters legal protection to engage in mobilization activities.
The First Son has over the past two years been using the MK Movement to organize political rallies greeting people as his crusaders continue drumming up political support for him despite being a serving army officer who is barred from engaging in active political activities.
He consequently declared his presidential ambitions, come 2026.
The group members have also defended Gen Muhoozi on several matters.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba last year slammed the old generation of leaders to which his father, Museveni belongs for dominating the young generation noting that he is tired of waiting.
“The Prime Minister of the UK is 42 years old; the Prime Minister of Finland is 37 years. Some of us are hitting 50 years old. We are tired of waiting forever. We will take a stand! Fidel Castro, my HERO, became President at 32 years. I’m about to hit 49 years old. It’s not right. The Presidency of the nation is meant for young men. How many agree with me that our time has come? Enough of the old people ruling us. Dominating us. It’s time for our generation to shine,” Gen Muhoozi tweeted.
President Museveni last year warned Gen Muhoozi to watch out for some of his supporters whom he said are self-seekers.
He also said the issue of Muhoozi is “partly due to the weaknesses of NRM
“Some of the frustrated youths go to that group (MK Movement) thinking that there is hope.”
Muhoozi, now serving as a Senior Presidential Advisor in charge of Special Operations, is expected to stand for President in 2026.
