The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have arrested a man impersonating a UPDF soldier, who had been evicting residents and seizing land in Kakiri town council, Wakiso district.
Identified as Adams Ssentongo, the imposter was found in possession of UPDF uniforms, shoes, and various military insignia. Major Charles Kabona, the spokesperson for UPDF’s First Division in Kakiri, stated that an investigation was launched following numerous public complaints about a supposed soldier threatening to confiscate their land.
“We decided to track down this individual tarnishing our image. With tips from the locals, we apprehended him with uniforms, shoes, a fake pistol, and a walkie-talkie,” Kabona said.
Kabona further disclosed that Ssentongo had promoted himself to the rank of Major General at the time of his arrest. Ssentongo admitted to obtaining the military attire from a friend stationed at Mbuya barracks.
During Ssentongo’s interrogation, Hannington Ssekandi appeared, claiming to be an Internal Security Organization (ISO) soldier and attempting to rescue Ssentongo. However, when UPDF officers requested proof, Ssekandi’s provided army number raised suspicions, leading to his arrest as well.
“We are charging both individuals with impersonation and damaging our reputation. They will be prosecuted in the military court,” Kabona stated.
