Kampala, Uganda – In a call to action, Mr. Sam Bwaya, a Board Director at the Equity Group Foundation, has urged Equity Leaders Program (ELP) Scholars to harness innovation and technology, aiming to significantly impact their communities and personal lives. Addressing 40 outstanding university students during a transformative training session held at the Equity Bank innovation hub at Eureka Place Hotel in Ntinda, Mr. Bwaya emphasized the importance of standing out and delivering technological solutions to emerging challenges.
Moreover, Mr. Bwaya commended the efforts of Equity Bank Uganda and Kenya teams in setting up the innovation hub. Notably, the event featured contributions from ELP alumni Eliud Njogu and Julius Njuguna, who is the Co-Founder of E&M Technology, a company specializing in software development for the financial sector across East Africa.
“The journey of innovation is rarely straightforward; however, a bend in the road doesn’t signify the end of the road,” Mr. Bwaya stated, underscoring innovation’s role in driving progress.
Throughout the weeklong event, students engaged in app development, addressed technological challenges, and shared innovative ideas. Following this initial training, the scholars will, subsequently, join 400 other ELP scholars from the region in Kenya for further incubation. This subsequent phase will enhance their knowledge and offer deeper insights into the tech industry.
The launch of the Equity Group Innovation Hub marks a critical step as Equity Group spearheads the Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP). This ambitious initiative aims to digitize value chains for 100 million customers, necessitating a pool of skilled technical talent and innovators.
Established in 1998, the Equity Leaders Program is a leadership development initiative targeting top-performing students. It has, over the years, benefited more than 24,000 scholars across East Africa, striving to build a community of transformative leaders who drive sustainable growth in Africa.
Additionally, the program empowers academically gifted young scholars by supporting their access to education at top global universities. Consequently, ELP has sent five scholars from Uganda and over 900 from other Equity Group subsidiaries to prestigious institutions such as MIT, Yale, Harvard, and Princeton.
