The Chief Justice, Alphonse Owiny-Dollo, has reportedly communicated concerns to President Yoweri Museveni regarding the conduct and statements made by Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo. These concerns were shared through a confidential source who preferred anonymity. According to this source, the Chief Justice conveyed to the President that Opondo seems to be acting independently and no longer accurately represents the government. It was indicated that Opondo has been frequently expressing personal opinions on various matters, which has led to confusion among the public.
Specifically, the Chief Justice cited Opondo’s remarks concerning the Baraaro issue in Northern Uganda as an example. He pointed out discrepancies between Opondo’s comments and the public statements made by President Museveni regarding the same matter. This inconsistency has contributed to the confusion among citizens who struggle to differentiate between Opondo’s personal views and the official positions of the government.
Furthermore, the Chief Justice urged President Museveni to address the leadership dynamics within the Uganda Media Centre. He expressed concern that both Opondo and his deputy, Obed Katureebe, appear to be more focused on engaging in political power struggles rather than effectively communicating government priorities to the public. This suggests that there may be a need for a reassessment of the roles and responsibilities within the Media Centre to ensure clarity and consistency in government messaging.
