President Yoweri Museveni, Commander in Chief of the armed forces, has appointed Brigadier General Asaph Nyakikuru Mweteise as the new deputy commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), replacing Brigadier General Charity Bainababo, who has been sent to the National Defence College (NDC).
Brigadier Nyakikuru, promoted from Colonel to Brigadier two months ago, previously led the Special Forces Commando Force and has extensive experience in various military operations. In Somalia, he played a crucial role in operations that enabled the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) to dislodge entrenched Al Shabaab militants from Mogadishu. Additionally, in 2013, Nyakikuru commanded commando units that thwarted Riek Machar’s attempt to seize power from President Salva Kiir in South Sudan.
Nyakikuru has also been active in combating the Allied Democratic Forces in western Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Northern Uganda. Furthermore, he led military operations in Kampala during the opposition protests in 2021. In recognition of his leadership, President Museveni upgraded the first Commando Battalion under Nyakikuru’s command into a Brigade in 2021.
Nyakikuru has been overseeing Camp Rufu in the Kiruhura district, a military facility specializing in sniper commandos and serving as the base for the One Command Battalion and the Special Forces training center.
Nyakikuru’s appointment is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the effectiveness of the SFC and ensure the successful implementation of Uganda’s security operations.
