Susan Amero, the Amuria Woman MP, has announced that she will not seek re-election in 2026, expressing her fatigue with the political scene in Uganda. Currently serving her third term as an independent Member of Parliament, Amero initially held office under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) but chose to run independently after losing the NRM flag in 2020.
During a Cooperative Alliance regional consultative meeting in Mbale, Amero shared her decision to retire from what she described as the “messy politics of Uganda.” She highlighted her desire to take a break and spend more time with her family after a long political career. Amero hinted at the possibility of future roles in government or within farmers’ cooperatives but reiterated her resolve to step back from politics.
Reflecting on her contributions, especially in education, Amero recounted providing scholarships to vulnerable children and financial aid to women’s savings and lending groups. She emphasized that she has accomplished much over her 15-year tenure and believes it is time for new leadership to take over.
Addressing suggestions that her decision might stem from declining support or a disconnect with her constituents, Amero firmly stated that her choice is personal. She questioned the rationale of continuing until forced out, preferring instead to leave on her own terms and use her resources more effectively elsewhere.
Amero has already informed her constituents in Amuria of her decision and remains committed to supporting them from outside the government. She believes in the potential of new initiatives like the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) to continue benefiting the people. Amero concluded by reiterating that she has no new contributions to make in Parliament and is ready to step aside for new leadership.
