The recent appointment of Eng. James Nkamwesiga Kasigwa as the new Executive Director of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has ignited a legal battle. George Ahimbisibwe, a concerned citizen, has filed a complaint alleging that the appointment by Trade Minister Francis Mwebesa violated the UNBS Act.
Ahimbisibwe’s legal representation, Wanambugo and Co. Advocates, has formally requested both the Inspector General of Government (IGG) and the Attorney General to investigate and potentially overturn the appointment. The crux of the complaint centers on the Minister’s alleged disregard for the National Standards Council’s recommendation of two shortlisted candidates, opting instead for Eng. Kasigwa who was not among the recommended choices.
This controversy follows a thorough selection process that included a public advertisement and interviews, culminating in the National Standards Council’s recommendation. Ahimbisibwe contends that the Minister’s decision disregards established legal procedures and undermines the integrity of the appointment process.
The case now rests with the IGG and Attorney General, who will investigate the claims and determine the legality of Eng. Kasigwa’s appointment. The outcome of this legal challenge will significantly impact the leadership of the UNBS and could set a precedent for future appointments in public institutions.pen_sparktunesharemore_vert
