A devastating flood, triggered by the overflow of River Zoka, has displaced more than 100 individuals in Ukusijoni sub-county, Adjumani district. The flood, occurring on Sunday, severely impacted Rubangabin and Sinyanya villages, submerging residences, latrines, and extensive crop fields. Moreover, a segment of the Obongi-Sinyanya-Adjumani Road, leading to the Sinyanya ferry landing site, has become impassable for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Mansur Butele, a resident of Sinyanya village, expressed dismay over the recurrent floods since 2020, urging the government to aid in relocating affected individuals to safer zones. Evelyn Droru, another affected resident, attributed the flooding to a two-day continuous downpour and highlighted the difficulty in accessing schools due to submerged bridges.
Michael Cadri, a local trader, underscored the adverse effects of the heightened water levels on the transportation of goods between Adjumani and Obongi districts. Peter Taban Data, the Adjumani Resident District Commissioner, revealed that assessment teams have been dispatched to evaluate the extent of the disaster. He also mentioned that the Uganda Roads Authority (UNRA) has been alerted to address the recurring flooding issue along the Obongi-Sinyanya-Adjumani Road.
Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, the Obongi Resident District Commissioner, cautioned road users to exercise vigilance while navigating through flooded sections of the road.
These floods follow a similar incident two months ago, disrupting travel between Adjumani and Obongi districts. Consequently, UNRA temporarily suspended the operations of the Obongi-Sinyanya ferry as a precautionary measure against potential safety risks.
