Diamond Trust Bank Uganda Limited (DTBU) has appointed Godfrey Sebaana, a seasoned banker with over two decades of experience, as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. Effective April 2nd, 2024, Mr. Sebaana succeeds Mr. Varghese Thambi, who has steered the Bank’s transformation and growth since July 2007 and will retire at the end of March 2024. Mr. Thambi will remain available for a transitional period thereafter.
Mr. Azim Kassam, Chairman of the DTBU Board, expressed anticipation in leveraging Mr. Sebaana’s expertise to build upon Mr. Thambi’s legacy and propel the Bank’s future growth trajectory. Welcoming Mr. Sebaana to the DTB family, Mr. Kassam highlighted his extensive domestic and regional banking knowledge, acquired during his tenure in Uganda and Tanzania, including his recent role as Executive Director and Head of Corporate, Commercial, and Institutional Banking at Standard Chartered Bank Uganda.
Mr. Sebaana’s professional journey encompasses diverse experiences in mergers, acquisitions, corporate advisory, and financial institutions management, spanning various industry segments such as global and local corporates, SMEs, and retail. With qualifications as a certified accountant and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh Business School, Mr. Sebaana’s appointment coincides with DTBU’s ambitious post-COVID business growth strategy, emphasizing digitally-driven customer acquisition and retention.
Mr. Kassam emphasized the Board’s confidence in Mr. Sebaana’s skills, local knowledge, and passion, foreseeing an accelerated transformation towards a digital-first, innovative bank prioritizing customer needs. Grateful for Mr. Thambi’s foundational contributions, Mr. Kassam extended appreciation for his stewardship in Uganda.
