Bob Wine extends his congratulations to Makerere University for their consistent trust in the National Unity Platform/People Power for the sixth consecutive year. He acknowledges the successive guild presidents from Julius Kateregga to the current victor, Lubega Vincent Nsamba, commending them for overcoming numerous challenges. Addressing Nsamba directly, Bob Wine encourages him to utilize his position to further the cause of the people’s struggle for freedom and democracy.
The newly elected Makerere University guild president, Lubega Vincent Nsamba, representing the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), emerged victorious in the recent election. According to Levi Tshilumba, the university’s electoral commission chairperson, Lubega Vincent Nsamba, a third-year Journalism and Communication student, secured 2,558 votes, surpassing his closest contender, Hilary Oremo Odwee, who obtained 2,531 votes.
Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) candidate, Akankunda Sabiiti, claimed the third position with 2,334 votes. Other candidates, including National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Baraka Nkoyooyo, garnered varying vote counts.
Nsamba’s popularity surged following the disqualification of Margaret Nattabi, the initial NUP flagbearer, from the race due to her participation in a public debate. Endorsed by NUP after Nattabi’s disqualification,Nsamba garnered increased support, bolstered further by Nattabi’s own endorsement of his candidacy.
Unlike previous elections where candidates freely associated with national political parties, this election witnessed hesitancy among candidates due to concerns about disqualification under the new guild statute. The statute, emphasizing the non-partisan nature of student politics, led to candidates refraining from overt party affiliations.
Despite technical glitches during the virtual elections, including erroneous notifications and difficulties accessing the voting platform, Vincent Nsamba ‘s victory stands as a testament to the support garnered by NUP at Makerere University.
