In a move to bolster media rights in Uganda, the Uganda Law Society (ULS) has unveiled plans to establish a pro bono fund aimed at supporting journalists across the nation. This initiative, which offers legal services free of charge, seeks to provide assistance to journalists facing legal challenges.
The announcement came from Bernard Oundo, President of the Uganda Law Society, during the Editor’s Guild Dinner held on February 23rd, 2023, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala. The event, hosted by Metropolitan Republic in collaboration with Stanbic Bank and Uganda Airlines, served as a platform for discussing pertinent issues affecting the media industry.
Oundo highlighted the necessity of the pro bono fund in safeguarding press freedom, particularly in light of challenges posed by influential government entities. He emphasized the pivotal role of the media as a watchdog for upholding accountability, transparency, and the public interest. Oundo stressed the importance of fostering an enabling legal environment to support journalists in fulfilling their duties effectively.
Recognizing the significance of such forums, Oundo commended the organizers for facilitating discussions on critical topics such as the rule of law, human rights, and access to justice. He announced plans for further training sessions conducted by the Uganda Law Society in collaboration with stakeholders like the Uganda Media Council, aimed at enhancing legal literacy among journalists.
In addition to offering pro bono legal representation for journalists, Oundo urged the media to promote legal awareness within their communities. He underscored the value of education in empowering individuals to understand their legal rights and obligations.
Emphasizing the importance of responsible journalism, Oundo called on journalists to wield their power with integrity and accountability. He referenced the words of BBC journalist Zain Verjee, highlighting the significance of truth, tenacity, and ethical storytelling in journalism.
Kenneth Agutamba, Head of Reputation and Communication at Stanbic Bank, challenged journalists to uphold the principles of journalism in combatting the dissemination of false information, particularly on digital platforms. He encouraged the media to embrace a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and responsible reporting to uphold the credibility of their profession.
