First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has strategically appointed several coordinators across different regions of Uganda as part of his efforts to establish the national structure of his newly launched political party, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
Gen Muhoozi, also serving as a senior presidential advisor on special operations, recently unveiled PLU, a political group that insiders cautiously refrain from categorizing as a party or pressure group, though it is expected to evolve from the MK Movement into a fully-fledged party. These appointments aim to bolster the party’s presence and organizational framework in various regions of Uganda, in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 elections.o
Nelson Nshangabasheija has been appointed as the coordinator for Kigezi, while Gulu West MP Martin Ojara Mapenduzi will oversee activities in Acholi, and Owekitinisa Henry Basaliza will take charge of Tooro. Jackson Atima has been designated to coordinate activities in Greater Arua.
Additionally, notable appointments include Didas Tabaro Tumwesigye as deputy coordinator for Ankole, Godfrey Kabyanga as coordinator for Rwenzori, Sam Kajojo Arinaitwe as deputy coordinator for Kigezi, Polly Katwiire Karamuzi as spokesperson for Ankole, and Joyce Daphine Walemba as the women’s representative for Rwenzori.
David Kabanda, the deputy spokesperson for PLU, underscored the significant role that these newly appointed coordinators will play in advancing the PLU’s agenda and fostering effective communication between the party and local communities. Their responsibilities encompass organizing party activities, mobilizing support, and representing the PLU within their respective regions.
Muhoozi’s decision to strengthen the PLU’s presence across Uganda is perceived as a strategic maneuver to consolidate his national influence, notwithstanding the NRM’s stance that President Museveni will be the candidate for the 2026 elections.
With the imminent elections, these appointments are expected to enhance the PLU’s engagement with voters and expand its political outreach.
Recently, a group claiming to support Museveni launched the PLU, replacing the MK Movement, which initially aimed to advocate for Gen Muhoozi’s interests.
The MK Movement, originating in April 2022 as a celebration of Gen Muhoozi’s birthday, quickly evolved into a platform for him to express his political aspirations and views on military, political, and foreign affairs. This evolution reportedly unsettled military leaders, local politicians, and foreign governments, prompting President Museveni to intervene and prohibit Gen Muhoozi from publicly commenting on these matters.
As a result, Gen Muhoozi has reduced his public engagements regarding politics and military affairs, despite some members of the MK Movement advocating for his presidential candidacy in 2026.
The situation remains dynamic, and the political landscape in Uganda continues to evolve as the country approaches the 2026 elections.
