In a heart-stopping incident on Sunday morning, former Rukungiri Members of Parliament, Hon. Rolland Mugume Kaginda and Hon. Betty Muzanira, narrowly escaped tragedy as their vehicle, registered under number UBM 874, veered out of control and overturned multiple times along the notorious Kampala-Masaka Highway in Lwera.
The two esteemed former legislators, en route to Rukungiri District for an important engagement, were thrust into a life-threatening situation when their vehicle lost its bearings. However, owing to their adherence to safety precautions, both Hon. Kaginda and Hon. Muzanira had fastened their seat belts, a decision that undoubtedly saved their lives.
Recounting the harrowing experience, Hon. Kaginda emphasized the critical role of seat belts, underscoring how this simple act of precaution shielded them from more severe injuries. He detailed how their skilled driver, in a valiant attempt to evade a collision with a boda boda cyclist merging from an adjacent junction, swerved abruptly, ultimately leading to the vehicle’s tumultuous overturn.
Grateful for their fortunate escape, both former MPs received prompt First Aid treatment before resuming their journey, buoyed by the kindness of a compassionate bystander who came to their aid in their time of need.
The aftermath of the incident saw the wreckage of their vehicle relocated to Lukaya Police Station for thorough inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as investigations into the precise cause of the accident are underway.
In response to this alarming incident, Katonga Regional Police Spokesman, Magidu Karim, issued a stern caution to all road users, urging strict adherence to Road Safety and Regulations to mitigate the risk of preventable accidents with potentially fatal consequences.
As this heart-stopping tale underscores, the vigilant use of safety measures coupled with adherence to traffic regulations can serve as life-saving guardians, ensuring that journeys are not marred by tragedy but instead culminate in safe arrivals, preserving the invaluable lives of all travelers on Uganda’s roads.
